WHY START A PILATES CLASS?
The benefits of Pilates are numerous. It is a method that, first of all, will
improve your strength, help you gain flexibility, and improve your balance. The
core, or abdominal muscles (stabilizing muscles) are the primary muscles worked
on in class. Joseph Pilates, who invented this method, called these muscles “the
power house”. We need these muscles to maintain stability and to support the entire
body whether we are moving or at rest. The Pilates method, however, considers
the body as a whole. The entire body works in every single exercise, so that you
will perform more efficiently and reduce risk of injury.
Through Pilates work, you will develop your body awareness (proprioception).
You will learn to “think through your muscles” and will arrive at a sense of ease
in doing any movement. Normally, when we have weak areas in our body, the body
is thrown into imbalance and other areas of the body work harder to correct the
imbalance. This is frequently the underlying reason for injury, chronic pain,
and fatigue. The Pilates method is designed to reeducate and realign the body.
The concentration on details of alignment makes this method of exercise unique,
and ultimately extremely gratifying for the Pilates student. Pilates will not
only teach you how to avoid injury, it will help you feel more energized and effective
in your every day life. Pilates is a journey towards Well Being.
